Columbia Wegmans -- The Building Is Going Up

After so much, the construction of the Columbia Wegmans has started to go up.  After years of waiting and months of knocking down trees and old warehouses, they're starting to build up, reports M.R. who took a photo yesterday.

Incredible that we need to wait until 2012, but it is good to see that they're pushing out.  Join the Facebook group.

(Update: It turns out that they're building a retaining wall.  I have never been so excited by a retaining wall.)

I think that's technically the parking garage, but a good sign nonetheless.

We can only hope that 2012 was a really conservative eta, and that they will be done much sooner...

If Wegmans is smart they will under-promise and over-deliver. Especially after all the frustrating waits so far.

It is a retaining wall. The parking garage will be in the front along McGaw.

This is the description on the permit:
WEGMANS FOOD MARKETS/CONCRETE RETAINING WALL W/STONE VENEER & SEPERATE GUARDRAIL

Still, it's not just dirt being moved around. They've actually started building something.

We love our new Wegman's here in Prince George's County! It just opened and is so nice. Feel free to come down while they are building yours!

Great! Another large out of town company to come in and put small independent businesses out of business. But don't worry, HoCo taxpayers, lots of your tax dollars are being spent to make this happen! This will be a zero sum job gain; any jobs they bring will be offset by job losses at existing local businesses.

I've been a HUGE Wegman's fan ever since the first MD store was built in Hunt Valley. I drive up there about once every month or so. It's definitely worth the drive. I can hardly wait for the store in Columbia to be completed! In the mean time, I will shop at the new Wegman's in PG County. Anyone know when the store in Crofton is due to be built?

Just because a store is "bigger" doesn't make them a villain. Wegmans offers exceptional customer service, which is what sets them apart from the other super markets. The low prices are a bonus. Just being a small business doesn't mean a free pass to exist. Smaller stores must offer something unique to set them apart from the competition. I think there is room for both in H.C.
