As of this morning (June 24), there's a sign outside that says the grand opening is Saturday, June 26 and that they'll be giving out free small cones all day.

I went to Giant last night and found a whole lot of people milling outside Meadows Custard, eating ice cream and talking. Small orders were free, and larger orders were at reduced price. The promotion was very effective, judging by the crowds. Shortly before the announced closing time, one of the servers said that they had served over 2000 customers that day.

I tried an order of lemon Italian ice and another order of turtle. The Italian ice was excellent. The turtle tasted like real ice cream rather than soft serve. I wish them luck, and will be back with the wife.

I stopped at The Meadows today, Sunday, on the way to the Giant. There was a steady stream of customers at 4 pm. I tried a creamsicle frozen yoghurt that was really good. The size of the cones is smaller than those at Soft Serve but there seems to be a larger range of choices. I'm not sure which ice cream vendor I would recommend so I'll have to keep sampling each... many times.
