Daily Grind in Fulton Appears Closed

The Daily Grind coffee shop in the Maple Lawn development appears to have closed.  On Saturday, people put brown paper in the windows in Fulton just off Rte 216, and some guys were carting off tables, chairs and appliances.  They said the coffee shop was closed now, but they didn't know anything about the future.

This comes a few weeks after Orinoco Coffee House in Columbia closed.  People are clearly cutting back on eating out.  I'm sure that the Daily Grind folks never predicted that house sales would slow and depress the number of local customers in Maple Lawn.

Local restaurants matter.  HowChow is my fun way to let people know about their local options.  On Friday, I talked up Jessie X's drive to collect comments about local restaurants on her HoCo Loco Web site.  She figures that people might eat at locally-owned restaurants if they hear recommendations from other diners.  I figure she's right.  Take five minutes and give it a shot.

What, what, what? Say it ain't so!

Orinoco was by far my favorite, but Daily Grind was towards the top of the list. It wasn't in my neighborhood, but it's not far from my parents and I use a dry cleaner over there.

Got my latte at Daily Grind almost every day since they opened. Way better than Starbucks. Shouts out to Sophie, Steve, Lisa, and Richman (the best barista around). Howard County will miss Daily Grind. So sorry that yet another great small business couldn't make it in Maple Lawn...

We'll miss the Daily Grind and they sealed their own fate. As business slowed last summer they started to close early, then shortened food service. Since I never knew if they were open, closed, etc. I just stopped going. I understand the challenge of keeping a retail space open when there are no customers and the establishments have to recognize that unless they provide consistent service and products people will just stop visiting. Bring me a Starbucks in that location!!!
