Wegmans: They're Building, Anyone Know More?

The Wegmans hasn't exactly started to rise in Columbia, but at least they appear to be laying the foundations.

The site has lots of machinery, and it looks like they have leveled off large areas.  Of course, I'm just looking through the fence.  My source for real estate news is the Tales of Two Cities blog, which has predicted a Summer 2012 opening and talked about the parking garage.

For the future, I'm going to track the porta-potties.  I see three now.  I have a dream that one day I'll see them deliver 10 more, 20 more, enough porta-potties for an army of Wegmans construction workers.  It's good to have a dream.

(Update: Check out the comments below.  Also see Rick Bird's comment on the "I Want The Columbia, Md. Wegmans" Facebook page -- that footers are being inspected June 10.)

Anyone know more about the status of the Wegman's?  I assume the wet weather has slowed them down.  Anyone hear anything about an opening target?  Check back for my posts about news on Wegmans.

I'm definitely going to be one of the first people on opening day. I can't wait for Wegmans!

I'm really hoping this Wegmans will have the same layout as the Pittsford, NY location (I noticed that they are revamping some of the older Wegmans in upstate NY to look like it). This way, I definitely know where everything is and can make a beeline for it!

Their first phase will be the construction of the parking garage (YES an actual multilevel parking garage in Howard County, how new urban of them). There will be an entrance on the ground floor and on the second story. The clocktower will be on one of the corners of said garage. Construction of the store won't begin for another few months.

The parking garage doesn't have a permit yet. What you see being done is for the store. Building the simple garage first would block access to the larger store.

Since the construction phase is actually beginning, I think it's about time Wegmans gives us all an idea of a projected time frame. This has been anything but a normal process to have them open a store in Howard County. We have waited with great anticipation for over 6 years from when they first announced it. I really feel they owe it to all of us who have lobbied on their behalf on the local blogs and websites. (Including our host "Howchow"). I am so happy it's happening, but c'mon Wegmans, it's time for you to address the loyal Howard County contingency.

Wegmans in Frederick is a great store and they have a good selection of >reliable< Kosher-certified items other than the typical fare available in Frederick. However, my goal and the goal of those who want more Glatt Kosher (Deli and meats) and a greater variety of Kosher Dairy and cheeses is to get them to carry more items. This way, Frederick-area residents who keep Kosher, won't have to travel to Baltimore unless they keep a stricter or more-niche oriented Kosher standard (e.g. Cholov Yisroel, Pas Yisroel, Yoshon). Sorry, Hebrew National and products not accepted by the Greater Orthodox Jewish community are not sufficient.

Supposedly there are 3,000 Jews and others who buy Kosher products within commuting distance of Frederick, so there is a possibility things could sell well enough to convince Wegmans to carry the right stuff.

Giant Eagle on 7th Street carried some Glatt Kosher meat products for awhile, but their selection was limited and did not have enough word of mouth or Kosher purchasers to maintain the selection.

Well thats all. As I said I love Wegmans, just wish they had more.

I drove by last night and wished I had gotten a picture. There were several steel beams already up!

I drove by there yesterday evening. The structural steel is progressing. I took a photo of it, but I don’t know how to download it onto this blog.
