Family Market Closed In Columbia

Family Market in Columbia has closed.  The store in the Long Reach village center had opened last year with a mix of Asian, American and Latin groceries.  It was great fun, and it's a bummer that it didn't work.

Luke Lavoie has the story in the Sun.  Apparently, Safeway still rents the space and sub-let to Family Market.  They say they want to rent to someone else who would open a grocery.

It was really only nice and fun for a few weeks...went downhill quicker than anywhere I have ever seen! I wondered MONTHS and MONTHS ago if they were closing....not a surprise at all.

Not surprising. They kept renovating, shrinking stock, and that power outage probably put the nail in the coffin. It's unfortunate that the neighborhood has no anchor store, but you've got Wal Mart and Target so close, it's kind of not surprising that people are shopping elsewhere. I'm impressed the other local shops remain open. I hear the landlord is pretty iffy. The whole thing is a mess.

Bummer maybe, but if the Sun is correct then it isn't a company you want to do business with and especially don't want to buy food from. Powered by generator? Too cheap to pay for electricity? What else are they cutting costs on?

Very sad. I take classes and teach at the Art Center, and they could really use a nice grocery store for more foot traffic there.

Did they dump all the food, counters and stuff out on the sidewalk like they do when they evict someone from their home? Or is all the food locked up in the store (thinking of a bad refrigerator full of food after a month...)?

I loved Family Market when it first opened. I continued to go there when the stock decreased because it was a great place to get tomotillos (always $0.99/lb). Sad.
