El Hidalgo gets a Howard County Times writeup in a review that appears online in Explore Howard. Donna Ellis ate dinner at the Elkridge restaurant, and she interviewed the owner so we get the interesting fact that he used to own Zapata in Columbia.
I ate there for lunch a couple of weeks ago with a a friend and my family. I had pork tacos "al pastor". There's was so much gristle in the meat that I took out half of it. After I finished my lunch, I was still hungry and had to snack again as soon as I got home. The rest of our party enjoyed their meals but it was nothing to write home about.
I had dinner here a few weeks ago and I wasn't overly impressed. We were the only ones in the restaurant, yet the service was slow. The chili con queso was good, but I was expecting more cheese. I had the chicken fajitas and the portion was large, but lacked seasoning. My dad had the stead fajitas and he had the same opinion. I've eaten at Zapata's too and their food was much more flavorful.
I was there a few weeks ago and had the chiles rellenos. The meal was fine, but nothing I'd rave about. The service was ok. It was a quiet night - maybe one other table was occupied. There was always a server when we needed one, but they weren't visible most of the time. I was surprised that IMO the restaurant looked like an older place inside, rather than something brand new. And the chiles rellenos at Mi Casa are much better.
We've been here three times now and loved the food, although we agree the service is still a work in progress. My husband is of Colombian descent and particularly approved of the Colombian items on the menu, which he pronounced authentic. I'm more of a Tex-Mex girl and really enjoyed the chicken enchiladas with a salsa verde. Items from the kids menu were good portion size and reasonably priced. The last time we went, on a Friday early evening, we just beat a rush that filled every table in the place. Our food came out quickly, chips/salsa/drinks were kept filled, but we had to wait a bit for our check. We will absolutely go here again. You may want to check out restaurant.com or those coupon magazines you get in the mail for discounts, since every little bit helps.
Tried this place when it first opened and found service slow then. Wanted to try it again, but I see from Christine Feb 2011 post that service has not improved. That is a shame since it is not a very large dining place. I still prefer going up to Clarksville for Mexican food.
