2 Dudes Hit Up The Crab Cakes At G&M

The 2 Dudes blog wrote up the crab cakes at G&M in Linthicum Heights last month, and they joined other people to rave about huge, meaty cakes.

G&M is a perennial on people's list of the best local crab cakes -- which, of course, means the best crab cakes in the world.  These are so big that teenagers could barely eat them all, and the 2 Dudes talked up the sweet crab meat with tasty seasonings.

I need to check out G&M one day.  If you're looking for other crab cakes, check out the Food Lovers' Guide To Baltimore for suggestions on that and other local foods.  If you're looking for other local food voices, check out the blogs in the right column below.  Lots of people were writing while I was on hiatus, including many who appear on the HoCo Blogs food page.

I've been to G&M several times. Honestly, their quality has gone downhill over the past few years, and I refuse to go back. The crab cakes were the only good thing on my plate. The bread was stale, the salad was iceberg, the green beans were canned, the corn was canned. I'd go to Phillips instead. Or Gunnings.

The real question is: do they use real Maryland blue crab meat? Or is it that industrial stuff from Viet Nam, that's not even the same animal?

For the love of all things Baltimore, please stay away from G&M! Their crabcake is awful. I mean terrible. Really, really bad. For the best crabcake, you have to go to Faidley's, but you can stay right in Howard County and get a fantastic crabcake at Shannon's. Gunnings has gone downhill as well. Yikes.

G&M is not Maryland blue crab meat:
http://www.marylandseafood.org/true_blue.html

oddly enough, it doesn't seem like there's a single restaurant in hoco that's true blue'ed...

and I still like G&M occasionally, but I agree that the crabcake is the only good thing there... everything else is very ... canned/prepackaged....
The crabcakes are also a bit on the salty side, but they don't skimp on the meat... the only question is where does the meat come from....

As with all things people have favorites. The big thing about G&M is that they are so large. All the non-Marylanders that review the place all claim there are no fillers. Of course they are wrong about that. Crab-cakes can't stay together without any. G&M uses more of a dry mix then Timbuktu. Some prefer Timbuktu's mayo taste, others don't. I think G&M'ss are good but not spiced well. Of all the "big" ones in Maryland I prefer By The Docks in MiddleRiver. None of these locations have been certified as using MD crab. G&M definitely doesn't. If you go to G&M most of the other stuff other then seafood is average to below average.

Here's more info. that may give some insight into why MD crab is scarce at local restaurants. http://bsun.md/1eRjaC0 Agree with Jim - everyone has their favorites. Kudos to the 2 Dudes blog for reviewing G & M and giving a teenage voice to the foodie movement. Impressed they have been writing for 3 years. Hope they continue.
