Wordbones says Wegmans may be on track for a 2009 or early 2010 opening. Sounds great to me, although I have heard that Wegmans builds slowly because the company is very particular. The Wegmans website already lists store openings through November 2009 and says "TBD" for the Columbia site.
(Update: Check out the anonymous comment about the planned Frederick Wegmans. On the company's Website, that Frederick store is listed above Columbia. I don't know whether the list is in the order that they expect to open, but it can't speed up construction to have so many projects at once. Thanks for the comments.)

It's a shame - the Wilde Lake village center sits empty. I wish they wouldn't build and would use an existing structure.
I know the feeling, but a Wegmans would wipe out Wilde Lake. The stores are huge, and they draw from miles -- more like a Target than a Giant. Even if they demolished Wilde Lake and rebuilt on the site, the traffic would overwhelm the two-lane road leading to WildeLake. I love Wegmans, but I wouldn't want one inside my neighborhood.
Having grown up in a small Upstate NY town with Wegmans as the "center of the universe", I CAN NOT wait for Columbia's to open! It is an AMAZING store with good prices to boot!
This is wonderful news. I've been waiting for Columbia to get a real grocery store since I moved here. I'm so tired of the Safeways and Giants. I really like the Harris Teeter, but it's not that convenient for me and it still can't compare to a Wegman's or a Fresh Fields.
Bring back Produce Galore and Bun Penny! But I know I'll try out Wegmans after hearing so much about them. (A distraction here: Galore was my source for a favorite brand of Australian licorice -- real licorice -- which I was happy to find at Trader Joe's after Galore closed.)
It will not open in 2009. According to a post on a Frederick website, Wegmans has planned all 2009 openings. See post on August 11 at 3:47 pm.

The traffic study appeal was heard last week. That likely will be denied.
Why do people want to stop Wegmans from coming? Why must we live in the People's Republic of Columbia.
