Fatburger: Hiring, Maybe Opening?

The Fatburger in Columbia is still closed, although they say that they're hiring.  I drove past this morning, and there is a sign on the door that says "Yes, we're hiring" and another that says "Coming Soon."

Both Nuttyturnip and the Baltimore Beer Guy saw the same thing and left comments.  Thanks for any updates.  I have no idea what takes so long.  Chick-fil-A built an entire restaurant on Johns Hopkins Road and opened it in the three months that I have been posting that Fatburger seemed close to opening.

Not relevant to this post, but I'm a recent transplant to Howard County, and your blog has proven invaluable in adjusting to the local cuisine geography.

One thing I haven't noticed any posts on is barbeque. For Christmas, you could write about BBQ in the area for me!

Happy holidays.

I peeked in the Columbia Fatburger window yesterday, and it looks as if it could open right now. They sure seem to be taking their sweet time.

Other than The Canopy and the chain Famous Dave's I'm not aware of any other Howard BBQ although I've only been here since February 08 myself.

The Canopy is real easy to find on the 40, just a walk-in/carry-out place with Baltimore's iconic pit beef plus pit pork and pit turkey and non-pit versions of those and boardwalk fries and a few other BBQ-ish sides like beans and cole slaw.

I'm not a huge pit beef fan but that place does it well although I usually stick to the turkey sandwich.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad that the blog was useful for finding local places. I'm actually going to try to write a few posts that collect some of the things that I've learned and link back to past posts.

I'll post separately with links to the BBQ sites, but you can also click on the "Cuisine - BBQ/Grill" icon in the right column. That will create a page that includes notes about Kloby's Smokehouse on Johns Hopkins Road and Smokey & Uncle Grube's off U.S. 1. Those are places for BBQ and pit beef, respectively.

I'm with the BBGuy that pit beef isn't my favorite, and true locals argue about the best with a religious fervor. But I enjoyed the Uncle Grube's sandwich.

There's also Bare Bones and Pig Pickers, both on Rt. 40 within a few hundred yards of Canopy. Neither are all-world, but offer ribs and pulled pork along with other stuff. I don't know of anything that would qualify as a "great" BBQ place in HoCo, though. Red Hot & Blue in Laurel may be the best nearby.

Pig Pickers is no great shakes, in my opinion. My North Carolina friend joined me there, and he was not impressed. (He WAS impressed with Big Bad Wolf in Baltimore.)
