Time To Order That Local Maple Lawn Turkey

Here come the holidays.  Sure, they can be stressful, but you should plan lots of fun.  Start with some local food -- like a turkey from the Maple Lawn Farm on Rte 216 in Fulton.

They grow and butcher the turkeys on the farm, and you can pre-order now to pick up right before Thanksgiving.  I actually haven't done this yet.  I  haven't cooked my own Thanksgiving since 2004.  But it's a local spot, and you get a truly fresh turkey -- along with options for other products like turkey sausage, smoked turkeys, and bags of wings, necks or drumsticks.

If you're thinking about Maple Lawn, consider sausage from Boarman's in Highland. That's just a little farther out Rte 216, and they make sausage that AnnieRie will use for stuffing.  You can pre-order sausage, oysters and more.

I just placed my order for Wagon Wheel Ranch Turkeys. They are amazing! I have not tried our local turkey yet...that will be next on the list!

I have heard that you can order your turkey at Boarman's and it is a Maple Lawn farm turkey - so you could kill two birds with one stone. I have already ordered my turkey from Maple Lawn, somehow it feels better to me than going to Giant and getting a Butterball. Supporting local farms and getting a good product, what's not to like !!

Was very happy with the Maple Lawn Turkey I made for a "Fauxgiving" dinner I hosted last year- much better than grocery store birds or even the turkeys I've tried from other local MD farms. This year I ordered 2 birds- we're smoking one and deep frying the other! Love Thanksgiving!!

They have the best turkey ever. I've been order it for years and I'm amazed at how much the crowds have grown.

I've been a loyal Boarmans customer for over 25 years and always buy my Maple Lawn turkeys there, but this year will be my last. When we picked up our turkey on Wed, several other customers complained that their supposedly fresh turkeys seemed to be frozen. The guy at the meat counter assured them that it was just the "outer shell" that was frozen due to the extremely low air temps Tuesday night. (Their outdoor coolers where the turkeys are stored evidently can't compensate.) I took their advice and left the turkey out for a couple of hours til the outside had softened and assumed the issue was resolved. Well, in fact, the bird appears to have been totally frozen. My 12 lb turkey has been in the oven for nearly 8 hours and still hasn't gotten to a safe temp, What a fiasco! As a loyal Boarmans customer I am extremely disappointed to have been so misled. If I had wanted a frozen turkey, I could have bought a 59 cent a pound one at any supermarket. Not sure if buying directly from the farm would have eliminated this issue, but I won't be dealing with Boarmans again.
