Potato Salad at Bon Fresco

Potato salad is a subtle art.  No one wants potato salad on the center of a plate, but the right flavor can make a meal.

At Bon Fresco, I go for the potato salad because it tastes like potatoes.  Tender chunks of potato.  Just enough creaminess and a touch of chopped vegetables.  This isn't deli salad where the mayonnaise gets equal billing.  This is a side dish that falls somewhere between homemade and a real restaurant, which makes it pair perfectly with Bon Fresco's sandwiches.

Most recently, I ate the spicy pork loin sandwich.  Again, it's real slices of pork with the authenticity of a homemade roast, but then topped with a professional touch -- mildly-spicy sauce and slices of roasted zucchini.  I'd never think to put squash on a sandwich, but it was delicious and unique.

If you haven't been there, you need to check out the sandwiches at Bon Fresco in Columbia.  The breads makes the place, and it is truly one of my favorite restaurants in Howard County

  1. Hi Howchow! I just HAD to comment on this. I have always been a hater when it came to potato salad. I like all other potato foods but this. However, one day, while lunching at Bon Fresco, which is easily my fav lunch spot, I tried a bite of hubby's potato salad. WOW, the BEST and most delicious potato salad I have ever had. Simply said in your post, it tastes like potatos, and it is creamy, but not mayonaissey.. Good thing my husband got the lentils too, cause I quickly ate his whole side. He loves the lentils there...

On a different note, last weekend I met a really nice couple at R&R deli. We had both never been there before and was so funny when we realized we both found out about this yummy taco/mexican place from your blog. The owner is so nice and the tacos are SO authentic! Walking out of there after a delicious and cheap lunch was wonderful! Next time I go, I am trying a sandwich on the recommendation from the people we met! And it's easy to quickly get over the fact that its essentially in the gas station :o)

    Thanks for all the recommendations!!!

  2. Okay this is pretty compelling!! I have got to make my way over there. I don't like potato salad but if it doesn't taste mayonaisse-ey it might just work! Plus the sandwich looks heavenly.

  3. Unrelated to the post, but to piggyback on Snoopy's comment: I had a similar experience at R&R Deli. My friends lives very close by, so I convinced her that we should go there for lunch one day. There was one other person at the counter ahead of us who seemed really excited about the menu. The person who I assume is the owner (he's been there every time I've been in, working the front) asked all of us if we heard of it from "the blog". The answer, from everyone, was yes.

  5. I didn't think their potatoe salad was all that great, but I've only had it once. The good thing about it was that it wasn't too mayonaisey, but it was so pureed that it was almost like eating mashed potatoes. The consistency of it was not like your usual chunky potatoe salad.

  7. Stephanie T -- I wonder if the excited guy in front of you was Wordbones from Tales of Two Cities.

I seriously think R&R should have a plaque or something from HowChow so that everyone knows that they're at the right place!

  8. the chicken sandwich with the tomato spread is really good from bon fresco is really good too... And yes, the potato salad is not overwhelmingly chunky but, in my opinion, so yummy!

When the weather gets warm we should all head to R&Rs for a get together! lol

PS: very excited about NY deli and hope it reminds me of home, plus they are on carry out menu, which is awesome!

  9. I am at Bon fresco right now with my wife. My wife got the grilled vegetable sandwhich and I got the chicken breast sandwhich. Both are awesome. I am partial to the israeli cous cous, but the potato salad is good too.

Btw, we just went to nazar produce market across the parking lot and got some apricot fruitrollup kind of stuff and halva for dessert.

  10. Hey Howchow,

Thanks for the Bon Fresco recommendation.

We've tried the Turkey and the London Broil and they were so awesome that the next day we went back and tried the Italian and the Pork Loin.

    Fantastic sandwiches.

  11. Perhaps owing to your recommendation, yesterday they were out of potato salad. But the corned beef and brie sandwiches were both delicious.

  12. Talking about the pork sandwich -- best thing to do is get it as flat bread ... the pork picante as is on flatbread - huge and awesome

  13. We had our first Bon Fresco experience today and we'll definitely go back. Everything was fabulous. The Brie sandwich was to die for, and the potato salad! Yum! I'm not a huge fan of potato salad, but this was fabulous.
