The Columbia Wegmans: Let's Be Honest, It Looks Like We're Waiting To 2012 For Danny To Open

I drove to the site of the Columbia Wegmans this week to prove the naysayers wrong.

In March, people had quoted a Wegmans employee as saying the shop on Snowden River Parkway wouldn't open until 2012.  But I had dreams.  I had hopes.  I saw myself strolling through the aisles next year.  Maybe not really at Valentine's Day, but 2011 at least.

Unfortunately, the Columbia site looks dead to me.

I parked on McGaw Road, and the chain link fence seems to protect a few construction vehicles and a lot of dusty ground.  Nothing looked like a rush to serve me deliciacies.  I assume the real action is taking place in Frederick where Wegmans Web site lists a 2011 opening date.  Columbia remains "to be determined" -- along with a pack of stores like Germantown, MD and Northborough, MA that weren't on that list when I started checking.

Anyone know more about a starting date?  I need to re-think my plans for a Valentine's Day roundup at the Columbia store.  I thought I was being optimistically humorous.  Now, that just seems sad.

  1. I am starting to get really annoyed. If the other supermarkets in the area like Safeway and Giant are so concerned, then maybe they need to improve what they offer to make their stores more competitive. This has been utterly ridiculous.

We want the Wegmans and we have all been put off long enough!!

  2. The one in Landover seems to still be slated for a 2010 opening. The more that open in Maryland the better.

  3. We drove by the site a few weeks ago and they were clearing the trees that lined Snowden River. Sadly, it looks like that was the last time it was worked on since every time I've driven past since then, it looks exactly the same.

  5. The company with the grading permit seems to be getting ready to start. There is a second office trailer there now. This one is inside the fence. There is a sign for the grading company leaning against it.

I checked to see if there are any new permit applications on the county website. There is one for a retaining wall. There is a note on it that says a redlined SDP will need to be approved first.

  6. I used to like the Safeway in Enchanted Forest a lot but lately it has really gone downhill. The shelves aren't well stocked and the selection keeps getting narrower and narrower. You would think they would be concerned about the imminent arrival of Harris-Teeter.

  7. Is Harris Teeter coming to the Enchanted Forest area? If that's true, I can't wait! Frankly, I find it disgraceful that the quality of grocery stores in the Columbia/Ellicott City area is so poor. Ellicott City needs a good grocery store. This is, supposedly, one of of richest areas in the county. It was just named the second best community to live in by Money magazine. And yet grocery shopping (actually, shopping in general) here is absolutely sub par. I don't think that people who have lived here for an extended period of time realize what everyone else has and what we don't have. I'm not sure what the reason is, but I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the grocery store looking for a fairly basic ingredient only to find that it isn't sold there. I suspect that it has to do with the lack of competition amongst retailers that is not just tolerated, but rather promoted, in this community.

  8. Edit to the previous post: This is, supposedly, one of the richest areas in the country (not county). Sorry about that...
