The Bonaparte Bread in Baltimore closed and had a sign saying that the owner had gone to France to avoid money owed to the government, reports the Baltimore City Paper.
The City Paper said the sign -- which was later removed -- said the Savage location closed as well.
Does anyone know if the Savage store is open? Anyone know if they're closed temporarily or forever?

Hello Mr. HowChow. I was speaking to the owner of Turkish Family Market on Route 40. They have acquired the adjoining store and are bringing Turkish Family Kitchen, an authentic turkish restaurant. I have lived in Turkey for several years and I am very optimistic about their vision. It will be combination of popular dishes and home cooked food. They will make turkish doner(shawarma/gyro) themselves. It will be the traditional yaprak doner, very thin layers of meet on the skewer and they hope it will be better than the Doner served at Divan in Washington DC. You should definitely try!!
ReplyDeleteI know one of the workers at the Savage Mill store and it is closed permanently. Their last check bounced.Their current check will probably bounce too. The story is the owner fled back to France to be with his ex-wife and because he owed more than $40,000. 25 hard working bakers and front house staff lost their jobs and thousands in back pay. Pretty sad.

I don't suppose the Turkish Family Kitchen will have those awesome coconut raspberry chocolate dipped pastries that I loved from Bonaparte, will they? They will be missed.
ReplyDeleteFor excellent pastries and other dessert-type baking, we still have Touche Touchet. I will miss Bonaparte's superb bread and having an occasional lunch at the Savage Mill location. (I still have one or two loaves in the freezer from my last visit!)
ReplyDeleteNews flash. Bonaparte Savage Mill is back open under new ownership (?) and management. Some employees were even paid for back wages. I'm pretty sure the Baltimore location will remain closed with some of those employees now working at The Savage Mill facility.

ReplyDeleteSuper-sad to see Bonaparte go, still stop by the Fells Point location couple times a week hoping it will open again. One of Bonaparte's wholesale clients gave us advance warning, but we didn't heed it. :(
We heard the same rumor, something about sales tax. I haven't read any confirmed facts, though. To add insult to injury, one of the rolling pictures on Baltimore City's website is of Bonaparte: http://www.baltimorecity.gov/
Bonaparte is definitely reopened in Savage. We went there this past weekend. New ownership, same staff from Savage and a few faces from Fells Point. Yay!
ReplyDeleteHello everybody. We just went to the Savage location on Friday 7/3 and it was open for business and the legendary quality hasn't changed. We do not know who owns and operates it now but you can tell that the staff is following the recipes and the quality of the pastries is excellent. Our group is actually making plans for Sunday brunches once a month. So come back and help keep this place in business!
