Short Rib Pastrami At Whole Foods: House-Smoked Beef & Turkey Lured Me To Sandwiches

Short rib pastrami at Whole Foods
I'm still looking for the hidden gems at Whole Foods, and I'm trying to work the edge of store -- produce, cheeses, fish, and the like.

Generally, I'm not big on sandwiches, but the deli has me packing lunch with meats that they smoke and slice in house.  Smoked turkey is moist and full of flavor, and it's even better paired half-and-half with short rib pastrami.

I'd never heard of that before.  Look in the deli case.  The have pieces of smoked short rib.  Presumably, they brine and smoke the cut in the way that brisket or beef round becomes your normal pastrami.

The smoke amazes me.  A sandwich of smoked turkey and short rib pastrami tastes nothing like your generic sandwich.  The short rib is fatty.  I'm surprised how much I enjoy the meat because I normally ask for lean corned beef or pastrami.  But it's a dry texture, and the richness pairs nicely with turkey slices.  They both have that smokey flavor and a slightly crunchy edge.  Less than a quarter pound of meat has a "big sandwich" flavor.

What else have people discovered at the Whole Foods?  The fresh-squeezed orange juice is criminally expensive, but it's spectacularly delicious.  I enjoyed some fresh ravioli, and I'm very happy with all the fruit and vegetables that I've bought.

  1. In the deli case, the Wellshire dry rubbed Black Forest bacon. Absolutely delicious. But a little goes a long way, 2 slices was more than enough for me at breakfast. It is very flavorful.

  2. I went there for lunch yesterday. Sat outside overlooking the lake. Very pleasant spot. I had salad - wow what an assortment to choose from. I couldn't decide which dressing so I had tow: buttermilk ranch and carrot ginger.

  3. I just wish they had a better assortment of soups. I hate seeing the same stuff week after week. Also? They need to make acai bowls. Yum!

  4. Just so you know, Whole Food's smoked turkey sandwich has 1,678 mg of sodium (info available on-line). If you're interested in your health, you can do better elsewhere.

  7. The cheese bar: feta with preserved lemon and Peruvian peppers... Yum! The salad bar...might be a $13 lunch but boy is it delicious! Have you tried a raspberry bar from the bakery? Amazing!

  8. I haven't seen this in the other Whole Foods that I've been in, but in ours on the other side of the pizza oven, facing the tables and chairs is a Bibim-bap counter where for $8-$10 you can get a bowl with rice, choice of 5 veggies, a protein, a sauce (I like the gochujang), and sprinkles of "crunch", sesame, and seaweed.
It's served at room temperature which I was not expecting, but it is very flavorful and a decent price.

  9. What Whole Foods calls pastrami is not real pastrami. This is some kind of meat that sits in a tub of grease and slathered onto bread. Unfortunately, there is no freshly prepared pastrami available around here, and I can't trek up to New York when I'm jonesin' for the real thing. Edmart in Pikesville still makes a great brisket, but their corned beef and pastrami are vacuum wrapped from Hebrew National to the tune of $25/lb. But Whole Foods "pastrami"? No!

And their chicken soup has smoke flavoring in it. Why?

At least it's a nice view over Lake Wazzapamani...
