I can't believe that I missed the HoCo Blogs event at Gadsby's Bar American last week -- especially now that I read the rave that Elizabeth wrote on The Bare Midriff about her cocktail.
Gadsby's is one several new places that we just haven't had time to try yet. I'd written before that they've hired Chad Spangler, a serious bartender trying to create a real name for the place among people who like cocktails.
Elizabeth loved the place and especially loved the drink that she got from Chad:
It was heavenly. Light and floral, but not cloyingly so. A hit of acid from the lemon, a smooth sweetness from the honey. It was just perfect. And of course it has me rethinking how I'm going to make my own lavender-gin cocktail.Check out the whole post on The Bare Midriff blog. Check out her links for more Vine videos like the one above or the one where Chad uses a blow torch to smoke a Manhattan.
For more, check out AnnieRie's post about the same event -- and the same bartender -- on the AnnieRie Unplugged blog. She has photos of food as well.
It was lovely! A fun, intimate, educational and inspiring event, in my opinion. Chad's knowledge and love for the art he practices so well -- the art of craft cocktails -- was eye opening.
ReplyDeleteNext party - Petit Louis Bistro, April 24th, 4-6 pm. http://goo.gl/u7WN7g Hope to see you there! And if you can help promote it also, that'd be awesome. Thanks!
Has anyone been to Jackie's Sidebar or NOLA? How do these compare? I'm picky about my cocktails...
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but it seems like there is a real disconnect between bloggers and many of those actually eating in and reviewing some of these newer places. Gadsby's and Petite are getting hammered on Yelp, comments, etc. Have not been myself, but the disparity in opinions, not sure if I'd commit.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Adam. I've been to Petit Louis twice and was not impressed. I've been to Le Comptoir next door and had a terrible experience. I wouldn't even try Gadsby's after terrible food at RGB. I don't get it why you like these places.
ReplyDeleteWhen bloggers are plied with free food and free booze they will never be able to offer objective opinions. In recent times it seems like anyone with a blog thinks they can be a restaurant critic no matter how unqualified they are. Blogs should be taken with a grain of salt as the vast majority of bloggers don't know what the heck they are talking about.
ReplyDeleteFood bloggers are hobbyists, not restaurant critics. They're allowed to be non-objective. Anyone's online reviews - bloggers, folks on Yelp, etc. - should be taken with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteI feel like food blogs are generally pretty easy to figure out. If their posting history shows that they go out of their way to find new and interesting places to eat, it's worth following. If their history is dominated by free food events, a liberal dosing of salt should be applied.
ReplyDeleteThe upside of sites like Howchow introducing me to places like Grace Garden, Bon Fresco, and R&R that traditional restaurant reviewers wouldn't hit more than make up for sites that are too favorable to places that hold blogger events.
Has Gadsby's Bar American closed? It has disappeared from Open Table. And we were the ONLY ones there last Saturday night between 5:30 and 7:00 P.M. I've heard that the chef was in an auto accident several months ago and has not returned to work since that time.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the last few times I've been in there, it's been pretty dead. I had to wait for someone to come greet me when I walked in the door and there was nobody tending the bar either- apparently they had a couple people call out that day and were running low on staff. It just seems disorganized still, which makes me sad because it seems like it has a lot of promise and the cocktails are decent, as are the appetizers at the bar.
ReplyDeleteAccording to people on Yelp, there is a 'closed' sign on the door at Gadsby's Bar American. Their website has also disappeared as has their presence on Open Table. I guess that answers the question.
