Challah rolls at The Breadery |
I stopped at the Oella bakery on Saturday and found challah rolls in the elongated shape perfect for hot dogs or sausages.
Both lunches this weekend were Harris Teeter chicken sausages cooked through, sliced in half, then served up on a toasted Breadery roll. The bread is delicious -- the light flavor of challah with a shiny egg wash and the soft texture that really shines in a hot dog roll.
I am known to empress baguettes when my only other option is a supermarket hot dog roll. They can be dry and tasteless. But it's true that baguettes can overwhelm a sausage with too much bread and a crust that's too crisp for the purpose.
The Breadery's rolls were ideal in size and flavor. They come in eight-packs, so freeze whatever you don't use.
Now I need some great sausages or hot dogs. Both Laurel Meat Market and Boarman's in Highland make their own sausages. Wegmans sells a hot dog in the deli section that was peppery and unique. Any other suggestions?

ReplyDeleteI got some really nice brats at Mom's in Jessup. They had a more interesting spice blend than your mass produced brat, possibly with some mace. They'd be awesome boiled with beer and sauerkraut and then grilled to make the casings snappy. The sausage selection at Mom's is better if you go the day the meat gets delivered.
ReplyDeleteWe are lucky in Maryland to have access to real German sausages (wursts) made locally at Binkerts in NE Baltimore. My German family and I get them at the Old World Deli in Randallstown, but perhaps some HoCo retailers carry them as well.
ReplyDeleteTry the Weisswursts or, if you are lucky and they have some, the Debriziner. Amazing!
If you want to have the best sausage you will ever try to go along with the best roll in the world let set something up. This is a very old family recipe that still gets made from scratch every year. Let me know if you would like to try it!!

ReplyDeleteSimply Sausage in Landover. Mostly mail order but very good sausages.
ReplyDeleteWhile I haven't used them for sausages, I have to disagree that the challah rolls are good as hot dog rolls. We have used them for lobster rolls, where they didn't work at all, and for hot dogs, where the rolls were still a bit too heavy, in texture (soft, but dense) and flavor (too eggy for hot dogs, IMO.) I'll have to try with sausages.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, their challah is good, it's just I haven't figured out what to do with it in roll form yet. I much prefer their regular hot dog rolls.
Thanks to Anonymous for the tip on Binkert's, we finally made the trip before Thanksgiving. We got debriziner, bauernwurst, and blutwurst. All delicious and very affordable too. Plan ahead though, cash only.
