Not that surprising. They had over priced, but only decent sandwiches.
ReplyDeletemOh that's a shame. I liked their food and atmosphere, and will be sorry to see them go. I live in Ellicott City, so driving down to Fulton meant I didn't go very often.
ReplyDeleteI hope they do open up somewhere else. It was nice to have a place to get Kosher food. I was disappointed it took so long for them to get the Deli license to sell meats outside of sandwiches.
Sorry to see the place close, but it just wasn't cutting the food wasn't very good the portions were tiny and the owner not very friendly. That location must be cursed its the third place to go out of business there. Quiznos, pizza fresca and now this
ReplyDeleteJust have to disagree with the point about the owner being unfriendly. Jay was and is extremely friendly. And he did the best he could -- I hope he will have success in his new location. Bill
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that the rent down in Maple Lawn is higher than most places, but the traffic is less than other places. I think that Maple Lawn is a good spot for places like Venegas or Looney's because it's a night out kind of event that takes you there. If I'm in Columbia and I want a sandwich, I've got plenty of places that I always pass by instead.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to see a Kosher deli go though...
I concur with those that noted the portion sizes were too small for the price. I also think the set up was off - the tables were set up in a way that made it hard to feel comfortable. It was strange. If they plan to re-open or re-invent themselves, they should examine the floor plan and consider how to provide greater value.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss it.
ReplyDeleteI was afraid it would happen, I just thought it would take longer. I'm extremely disappointed by this. Now I'll have to start bringing my lunch to work again every Friday. I agree with BaltoBill; Jay was always very friendly and every time I was in he'd go out of his way to say hi to all of the customers.
ReplyDeleteBut I do disagree with the overpriced comments; the prices are comparable with other kosher restaurants in Silver Spring and Baltimore. Kosher ingredients cost more than non-kosher, so prices are necessarily higher. Maybe not in New York where there's more demand for kosher food, but look at Kosher Bite, Max's, and Moti's and you'll find P&R was in the middle.
I called today and asked what was going on. The lady who answered said it was business problems. Jay is trying to line up a new investor. If they reopen, it will be at the same location.
ReplyDeleteIf they don't line up a new investor, I'll be sorry to see them go.
This was bound to happen. The food wasn't that great and very overpriced. The hours were inconsistent. The owner wasn't "mean" per se, but just socially awkward. When he had to discipline an employee, he did it in the open which makes the customers feel uncomfortable. He always chose the completely wrong times to try and socialize with his customers, which were typically when the place was crowded and people were getting irritable waiting for their food.
ReplyDeleteOh well - Maple Lawn is better off with this mixed bag.
Jay Fridkis is very inhospitable and unfriendly. It doesn't at all surprise me that others have seen him yelling at his employees. I would never patronize any eating establishment owned or managed by him.
