Watch for a new bread this week at Bon Fresco Sandwich Bakery -- a soft Italian loaf to go along with the ciabatta and baguettes.
No one sells better bread than Bon Fresco in Howard County. Now the owner Gerald Koh is sampling an Italian bread that Chris said "was perfect like everything else he does, crunchy, yet had a chewy sweetness to it. It's more like the usual bread you would get at a sub/sandwich place which I think will help introduce more people
who are not fans of the heavier breads like ciabatta or baguette."
Koh told Chris that they'll start selling the Italian loaf this week. Chris recommends trying it on the cold cut sandwiches like the Genoa or the Venice. And he has plans for a homemade meatball sub.
Glad to hear this! While I love the usual Italian picante sandwich, it does have the habit of falling out of the side as I bite into it. Hopefully a softer bread will correct this.
ReplyDeleteBon Fresco sells better bread than Great Harvest?
ReplyDeleteA lot of places sell better bread than Great Harvest. Their bread is tasty, but every single loaf I've ever tried there is terribly dense. Am I missing something?
ReplyDelete@Kooshmoose - I like Bon Fresco's bread more than Great Harvests. GH is one of those places that I haven't written about because I don't get the attraction. Like Stephanie, I think the bread is terribly dense. Too dense for me. I look for crisp crust and light inside, which is why I love baguettes. Other people love Great Harvests, and I don't write HowChow to smack around people trying to create quality food just because it isn't the food that I like. I would love a "Trolling" post that includes a paragraph about GH.
ReplyDeleteUm, isn't Buonaparte's Breads in Howard County? They sell perhaps the best bread in the country, much less the county. It's certainly the only French bakery run by a French baking family using a wood-fired oven on the continent...
ReplyDelete:-)
@David - I love the Bonaparte bread. But I don't know that it is better than Bon Fresco. Well, you're right that I'd take Bonaparte baguette to baguette. But it's close, and Bon Fresco has that ciabatta.
ReplyDeleteI am now picturing people dueling with baguettes instead of fencing foils. ;)

I LOVE Bon Fresco - it is one of my favorite places to eat. I think that their bread is just a different style than Great Harvest... crustier, and the crumb is not as dense.
ReplyDeleteIf you're into breads, I'm reading 52 Loaves - great book.
Never tried Buonaparte's Breads, but will have to put that on my list of places to visit!
Bonaparte's is near me. It has the bonus of having some very tasty tarts and other French pastries. You can get those w/ tea or coffee and sit in the courtyard at Savage Mill. Yum, yum, yum.
