Union Jacks To Replace Columbia That's Amore?

Union Jacks may be replacing the That's Amore that closed in Columbia, according to a comment by Anne who says she saw a sign on the shuttered restaurant.

I assume this is the Union Jacks that has pubs in Ballstom and Bethesda. (Update: John comments below that the logo looks the same.) Anyone know more about when it will open? Any reviews of the existing Union Jacks? This sounds like Trapeze closing in Maple Lawn and being replaced by Looney's, which has packed the parking lot ever since.

    Completely OT from your post, but are there any good jewish delis in the area? Or any that at least offer up a kick-ass reuben?

    You know, I haven't found a great deli in Howard County. Some good sandwiches, but not a reuben. I'm planning on checking out the new NY Deli on Snowden River -- maybe on Monday.

    Second that sighting. The logo on the sign looks like the logo for the Union Jack's in Ballston and Bethesda.

    I've been to the Bethesda Union Jack's. If it's true Columbia has just another Green Turtle or Looney's to look forward to with a Brit name and three or four Brit named dishes. It will be yet another place for 20 somethings to get bombed. Hurray.

    Charter Deli near Howard Community College is a very good deli. Nice folks, big, well crafted sandwiches and of course, a good dill pickle. Hot pastrami and provolone on rye with mustard. Yep. Just voted best deli in Columbia.

    Which is what that location was pre-That's Amore and pre-American Cafe, a seafood restaurant/bar whose name I can't remember. Its happy hour STARTED at 10 pm and lasted until closing, attracting the HCC night-schoolers, mall employees and post-Merriweather crowd. Good times!

    As a 20-something I can say with authority that the existing Union Jacks is terrible. Bad food, unfortunate atmosphere. Turns into a night club. Lots of drunk young kids grinding on the dance floor. Problem in Columbia is that they will be driving around after hanging out.

    Re: the Deli question. I've always enjoyed Joe's Place Deli. It's in an office building off of Snowden River Parkway back past the KFC. http://www.joesplacedeli.com/menu.asp It's only open M-F for breakfast and lunch.

    Just checked to see if www.unionjackscolumbia.com is taken. It is, and the address on the registration is the same as Union Jack's Bethesda location.

    So I'd make bank on this one.

    I work in the building above the new resturant (the noise sucks) and yes it is going to be a Union Jacks. Rumor has it that it is set to open sometime around Feb. Thankfully, it will be 1 less place for holiday shoppers to go and steal parking from the employees.

    This is a bit outside of Howard County but it isn't too far away. The Suburban House in Pikesville on Reisterstown Road is/was a great Jewish Deli. It is currently closed for rebuilding/remodeling after a fire. But when it recovers, I think your kick-ass reuben search will end. It had a quaint restaurant in the front and a deli counter in the back. www.suburbanhousedeli.com

    If you're looking for a Jewish-style deli and don't need kosher, try Attman's deli in downtown Baltimore. They've got real corned beef, tongue, chopped liver, knishes, smoked whitefish, chubbies, halvah, cream soda, and other goodies. Quality has slipped in recent years, but it's still the best deli I've been to in this area.

    Northwest Baltimore has a number of other options, IMHO inferior. These include Suburban House and genuinely kosher delis such as Liebes. Seven Mile Market has an in-house deli, but their meats are supermarket-grade rather than deli-grade. I wouldn't recommend any of these unless the drive to Attman's is too far.

    Disclaimer: I haven't (yet) tried the new NY Deli on Snowden that was referred to above.

    I tried NY Deli. On the plus side, the corned beef was good. On the minus side, no tongue, knishes, kishke, halva, or chopped liver. Looks like I'll continue to haul up to Baltimore when I need a real deli.
