Meet "Venegas Prime Filet" - The New Maple Lawn Steakhouse

The new steakhouse planned for November in Maple Lawn will be called Venegas Prime Filet.

When oZ Chophouse closed in August, there were talks about a new steakhouse from the owners of Jordan's in Ellicott City and Ranazul in Fulton across the street from oZ. Now, Jordan's is closed, and Ranazul's co-owner Carlos Venegas is opening the new steakhouse on his own.

The solo venture will be dubbed Venegas Prime Filet, according to the Maple Lawn newletter. The talk is still about opening in November.

  1. Word is that Venegas will be accepting Jordan's gift certificates as well.

  3. I assume the name says they will serve USDA Prime. I wonder whether the failure of other steakhouses in the area have not been at least partially due to their less than serious treatment of beef. Folks who love a good steak look for the tell-tale signs of a restaurant's bona fides such as "USDA Prime," "dry-aged," or "wet-aged." Shy of going that route, there was no reason to venture to oZ when a cheaper Longhorn in Columbia offered essentially the same quality.

  4. Let me just suggest that anyone thinking of opening a steakhouse in Maryland should look to Seattle's Metropolitan Grill for an example of how serious steak is done.

  5. I have to echo Rob's comment about the quality of beef being offered at the new Maple Lawn Steakhouse. This was always my biggest complaint with Jordan's especially for the price they were charging.

While I still question Mr. Venegas'opening of a competeting restaurant to Ranazul (which I enjoy) I hope he chooses to go a high quality "prime" route for a reasonable price.

  6. Carlos Venegas understands nothing about customer service and was heard to call a customer an "asshole" on 1/31/10. The oysters are awful, the service is average (no refills on water, too little bread & butter), the acoustics are terrible, the beef is pretty good, but not at that price. Stay away, or be careful of your complaints if you don't want to be called awful names.

  7. Always love an "Anonymous" post bitching with an agenda. Not sure what happened with Johnny Anonymous, but I hate posts without all information disclosed. Give us the story.. Would love to hear it. Obviously something happened to make you so jaded. I've never been called names over complaining about a certain dish not being up to par. Do tell......
